Air Pollution and Its Impact on Public Health Discussed in Bishkek

On February 26, 2025, Bishkek hosted a multilateral dialogue "Progress on Clean Air in Kyrgyzstan: Partner Cooperation and Initiatives for Effective Results." Participants discussed the current state of air quality, measures to reduce emissions, and international best practices. The event was attended by the Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic, Meder Mashiev; Member of Parliament Dinara Ashimova; UN Coordinator in Kyrgyzstan, Antje Grave; as well as representatives of the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

One of the key speakers was Professor Aynash A. Sharshenova from the Department of Public Health of the IHSM. She presented a study on the impact of air pollution on public health and introduced the development of the Air Quality Index (AQI), which will help assess pollution levels in real time and implement effective mitigation measures.

The dialogue included several thematic sessions focused on pollution sources, strategic measures for improving air quality, and international best practices in air management. During the discussions, experts emphasized the need for further cooperation between the government, international organizations, and civil society to create a safer and more environmentally friendly urban environment.
