Green University Discussions: Focus on green and digital sustainability initiatives
As part of the Erasmus+ GREENKG project, the International Higher School of Medicine (IHSM) conducted a comprehensive assessment of its sustainable development initiatives. The assessment covered six key areas: infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water use, transportation, and education and research.
Campus Infrastructure. IHSM boasts modern infrastructure, including an artesian well, a boiler house, a fenced campus, emergency exits, and a spacious parking lot. As part of its sustainability efforts, plans are in place to replace diseased trees and switch from coal to gas heating.
Energy and Climate Change. To improve energy efficiency, energy-saving LED lamps and filters have been installed, and landscaping with greenery has been developed. The construction of a new student campus is being carried out in accordance with green building standards.
Waste Management. IHSM is implementing the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). A system for separate waste collection has been introduced, and a contract has been signed with a local organization for organic waste processing. A dedicated organic waste program is planned for the future.
Water Use. Technical water is sourced from the school’s own well, while purified water is used for drinking. It is recommended to install water-saving devices, introduce water reuse systems (e.g., for toilet flushing), and develop a comprehensive water treatment and recycling program.
Transportation. Shuttle buses serve students and staff. Future plans include providing official vehicles for staff, limiting private cars on campus, developing pedestrian infrastructure, and promoting zero-emission transport.
Education and Research. IHSM actively promotes research and educational initiatives in the field of sustainable development. The school organizes thematic events, publishes scientific articles, and supports student clubs. Future plans include enhancing research activity, holding regular sustainability events, and launching a dedicated web platform on sustainability.
