The course in "Hematology" is mandatory and one of the most important sections of internal diseases. In previous years of study, students took courses in propaedeutic therapy, pathological physiology, pathological anatomy, pharmacology, propaedeutic therapy, the basics of medical communication and deontology. Therefore, students have sufficient basic knowledge to study the particular pathology of internal diseases.
Blood diseases, as a rule, are manifested by a change in its composition. It should be remembered that blood is just a mirror reflecting the processes occurring in the blood-forming organs, the main one of which is the bone marrow. Changes in the composition of the blood can be either due to the diseases of the hematopoietic system itself or be reactive in nature, i.e. arise in response to various pathological processes from other organs and systems. To understand the mechanisms of formation of the normal composition of peripheral blood and the causes of its pathological changes is necessary for the doctor of each specialty. A clinical blood test is part of the patient examination standard at all stages of medical care. The basic skill of a doctor is the ability to give a competent opinion on a blood test, the administration of additional examinations if necessary, and making recommendations to the patient in case of detection of pathological changes in blood composition. Therefore, timely diagnosis of blood diseases and the definition of adequate treatment is of great importance.
As part of this course, students will receive knowledge and practical skills in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the most common, major blood diseases.
Hematology as a branch of internal medicine has great features. Often its study causes difficulties for students. This is due, on the one hand, to the relative rarity of individual blood diseases, and on the other hand, to the need to remember and understand a large number of new terms, parameters and methods of laboratory diagnostics. Like no other branch of internal medicine, clinical hematology is very closely connected with fundamental natural sciences, in particular with anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Thus, the course “Hematology” will also allow to consolidate the knowledge gained in other disciplines (integrative knowledge). Teaching students how to analyze the knowledge gained and apply it in solving the problems of a patient with blood diseases helps to develop students' clinical thinking, a much-needed skill in the doctor’s practical work.
