POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION (PGME, 3 years) – is called a residence program (in Russian-ordinatura).The physians being educated in PGME are called residents (ordinators). Physicians will be prepared for practice in a medical specialty and focus on developing clinical skills and professional competencies. It also makes possible for physicians to obtain detailed factual knowledge of a respective medical specialty. This learning process prepares the physician for independent practice in a chosen medical specialty. The PGME programs of PGME are based on hospitals or other health care institutions, and in most specialties, utilize both inpatient and ambulatory settings, reflecting the importance of care for adequate numbers of patients in the PGME experience.

The primary responsibility of the PGME program is to provide an organized educational program with guidance of and supervision over the resident, facilitating the his/her professional and personal development while ensuring safe and appropriate care for patients. A resident takes progressively greater responsibility throughout the course of the residency, consistent with individual growth in clinical experience, knowledge and skill.

Medical school teaches physicians a broad range of medical knowledge, basic clinical skills and supervised experience, practicing medicine in a variety of fields, whereas medical residency gives in-depth training within a specific branch of medicine.

The specialties of PGME programs in different countries are called Masterdegree (MS), Master of Medicine (MOM), Master of Medicine (MMed), Doctor of Medicine degree (MD).

Successful completion of residency training is a requirement to practice medicine in many jurisdictions.
