LECTURE ON ENVIRONMENTAL EPIDEMIOLOGY

The lectures on Epidemiology were organized and conducted as part of the Erasmus + project № 573640-EPP-1-2016-1-IT-EPPPKA2-CBHE-JP “Strengthen Network Education, Research & Innovation In Central Asia”.

 

The theme of the lecture was:

 

Epidemiology and medical registries.

 

Study types in epidemiology. Bias and confounding.

 

Randomised controlled trials.

 

Lecturers were offered by professors from University of Tartu (Tartu, Estonia)- Katrin Lang and Kersti Pärna. Participants comprised PhD students of ISM and senior students. There were seven participants.

 

Objectives of the lectures:

  • Overview about Tartu University and Institute of Family Med & Pub Health
  • What is epidemiology, study methods and data needs
  • Examples of study types in epidemiology. Bias and confounding
  • Overview of research project relative to smoking in physicians in Estonia in 1982–2014

 

Achieved results:

Participants had a great opportunity to familiarize themselves with research studies and experience of Estonia in the field of epidemiology and to get knowledge in following subjects:

  • Measures of health endpoints
  • Smoking behaviour among physicians in Estonia in 1982–2014
  • Experience of Estonia how to combine datasets
  • Epidemiological studies
  • Bias and confounding
  • Randomised controlled trials
  • Health impact assessment

The first lecture contains a program and a brief summary of the main messages made during the lecture. The second lecture is devoted to the research project concerning smoking behaviour among physicians in Estonia. There is a data presentation describing smoking habits among Estonian physicians in 1982–2014 and introduction this project's results. In addition, lecturers introduce trends concerning smoking and alcohol consumption among the adult population in Estonia.

 

The lecture results in a discussion about the main points of view and opinions expressed in the discussion.
