Small Grants Program for Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases and Healthy Lifestyle among Students

 

The project “Effective management and prevention of noncommunicable diseases in Kyrgyzstan”, funded by the Government of Switzerland, is aimed to prevention NCDs and promotion of a healthy lifestyle among the population of Kyrgyzstan. The project announces a competition for small grants for Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) in Bishkek, pointed at supporting students in formation of a healthy lifestyle and prevention of noncommunicable diseases.

Purpose:

The Small Grants Program is aimed at promotion of health and prevention of noncommunicable diseases among students by creating an supportive environment in universities to reduce the main behavioral risk factors for NCDs:

1. Inadequate diet

2. Low physical activity

3. Alcohol

4. Smoking

Beneficiaries/target group: university students in Bishkek

Selection criteria:

• The competition for small grants is open to all Higher Education Institutions in Bishkek.

• Grants will only be awarded for projects that promote altering students’ behavior in relation to healthy diet, physical activity, tobacco and smoking.

• The program encourages innovative and creative ideas to improve health of the university students, but is limited by four NCD risk factors.

• The application (proposal) must cover at least one or more NCD risk factors. The application must be aimed at creating a sustainable supportive environment.

• Projects aimed only at information events/campaigns will not be considered.

• HEIs applying for a small grant must host a Health Day/Health Fair at their HEI related to all four NCD risk factors.

• Student participation in the collection of ideas and/or activities development is welcomed and will be an advantage in the selection of the winning universities.

• Project concepts (best practice model) with the possibility of dissemination to other HEIs will be an advantage in the selection of winning HEIs.

Gender issues and the approach Leave No One Behind implying inclusion are the essential criteria.

Amount and terms of the grant:

1. An applicant may submit only one application for participation in the Small Grants Program. The amount of one application should not exceed 500,000 soms.

2. Acquired tangible assets must be put on the balance sheet of the applying university.

3. Applicants' own contribution must be at least 15% (in monetary terms) of the grant amount.

4. The project does not consider the use of prize money for remuneration, training or travel.
